I'm beyond thrilled that we have had a really great an fruitful first year! What started as a passion project for me is now turning into a business.
I founded Geeks A Gogo for the sole purpose of showing how fun it is to "adult" and geek out! My team and I are composed of brilliant individuals with full-time jobs, and we still find a way to geek.
Despite paying for everything out of our own pockets, we travel to different places, go to different events and show that in some way, shape or form you can identify as a geek in different ways.
The journey to geek-dom started by creating the website a year ago, featuring a calendar that highlighted geek events in the area (mostly in the midwest). Check out this picture from the first website format we had!
Starting the website was such a gamble. I worked for a big company that required me to work almost every day of the week. My health was suffering to the extreme from being stressed out from work, and the passion that I had for this was the only thing I had going for me was slowly disappearing as I had no more time to do what I loved doing in my free time. I'd sneak in 15 minutes to 30 minutes out of my day just so I can do post updates, which is not much at all when it comes to blogging. I managed to sneak in our first blog post, since I was going to this event for work, and highlighted the geek aspects of the event!
On the first launch of the website, we hit 100 likes in less than 24 hours.Our 100th liker was artist, Ashley Witter, who would one day be creating the awesome artwork behind my epic business card.
I was so grateful for the support from people that it inspired me to keep going. Friends started to pour in their love for geek-dom by contributing articles. Our East Coast team was then formed, led by writer, Brian Woodman. His first post was published on June 6, 2015 with a film review of X From Outer Space.
Michael E. helped us with social media updates on our Facebook page, and I managed all other social media.
Our 100th post was published by writer, William Paprocki, on January 25, 2016. I am so blessed to have him in my life. He has been my right-hand, and my cosplay handler. and most importantly the biggest supporter and perfect companion to all of my geek adventures.
At the beginning of this year, I was so honored to be a part of Crown Championships of Cosplay, which gave me more knowledge of what it's like to compete in cosplay competitions, as well as giving me the chance to meet and learn from such talented and cool individuals. It was quite a huge achievement and it paved more opportunities for me to gain more ties in the community, now that I have proven my hard work and talents.
With 157 articles published since the start of the blog, we continue to grow into other forms of media, expanding our horizons with having a Twitch.TV channel and getting involved in planning and being a huge part of events such as the AllGeeks HQ Game of Thrones Viewing Party at MiniBar Chicago, as well as being part of the committee for International Sailor Moon Day - Chicago, in which I created the website for.
As years go by we look forward to working more with fellow geeks in the area to bring the latest in the exciting world of geeks out here in the Midwest.
