The upcoming event for June at the Vertical Gallery showcases Hebru Brantley with the theme Memoirs of the Minumum Wage.
In his visual survey of growing up in middle-class America, Brantley will show sketches, watercolors, paintings and sculptures that incite us to challenge the norm and question that on which we place value in society.
Inspired by his 1980’s Chicago upbringing, Brantley’s work touches on tough subjects with an affable approach, telling his stories through youthful characters and their adventures. Brantley’s pieces can be described as pop infused contemporary art inspired by Japanese anime and the bold aesthetics of street art pioneers Jean-Michel Basquiat, KAWS, and Keith Haring.

Recognized internationally, Brantley has exhibited widely and has received commissions from important collectors for large scale works around the world. He has collaborated with Adidas, Nike, Redbull and Skyy Vodka, among others, and has a roster of clients including George Lucas, Jay-Z, LeBron James, Lupe Fiasco, Tyra Banks and Swizz Beats. His work has been featured in Ebony, Jet, New York Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Reader. In 2013 he was chosen as "Breakout Artist" by New City and as a featured artist for Chicago Artist Month.
