Editorial: Swapping one doomsday for another
I have written in previous entries about the current condition of the zombie genre. A topic I have occasionally explored is the context in which it operates -- zombies have been proxies for a variety of social ills depending on what film you are watching, for example (consumer culture in'Dawn of the Dead,' Neo-Nazism in 'Shock Waves,' etc.).
But anxiety expressed in the media over recent events in North Korea has made me wonder whether the apocalypse itself, as expressed in fiction, may need to swap zombies out for other ideas.
In earlier science fiction stories, nuclear anxiety and the fear of mutually assured destruction was the preferred apocalyptic genre. This fell out of fashion as the Cold War ended, but will future stories about a speculative limited nuclear exchange between North Korea and other countries provide the basis for a new wave of doomsday thrillers?
