Oh my #$*&^% Rocky Mountain Con 2016 was incredible! I don’t know how else to put it, this convention shocked me with its awesomeness. True to it’s name, Rocky Mountain Con is located in the Denver Aurora area with the beautiful Rocky Mountains in sight. It’s a smaller con with the personality of a huge one, I don’t know how to explain it. The con only lasted two days, Saturday and Sunday, and was jam-packed with killer events. It was definitely a weekend to remember.
I was able to attend Rocky Mountain Con both days and went as Avatar Korra for both. I’ve never dressed as the same character twice for a con, but boy I’m glad I did. I was known as the waterbending girl/the poi girl/the person who keeps flipping things around. It was great. Anyway, enough about my cosplay and more on the con! As I said earlier, Rocky Mountain Con was full of incredible events to go to. Personally, I am not a big fan of going to panels (or “panals” for those of you who went to Rocky Mountain Con, LOL!) but I found myself having to limit which panels I went to because I wanted to go to them all! The celebrity guests this year were also, you know, pretty awesome. I got to, not only meet Michelle Harrison and John Wesley Shipp from The Flash, but have fairly intimate conversations with them. They are both incredibly kind people who go out of their way to meet and talk with their fans. They really made my weekend!
Speaking of making my weekend, I guess I sort of have to talk about all of the new friends I made. The Colorado Cosplay Community is so kind and inviting, everyone is so friendly to each other! If it weren’t for them, I would not have entered the costume contest and would not be proud to have earned judge's choice. What I have always loved about the cosplay community is how inclusive and supportive everyone is of each other. Whether it’s pushing someone to enter the cosplay competition or sharing different techniques to hone your cosplay skills, we are all there for one another.
When it comes to the geek culture, I believe a strong sense of community is very important. Rocky Mountain Con exemplifies this in a way I have never seen before. The creators of this con have teamed up with the organization Aurora Rise to help those affected by the Aurora Theater shooting. It’s an extraordinary way to give back to the community.
As I said at the very beginning of this, Rocky Mountain Con was so absolutely AMAZING. It’s honestly the most fun I’ve had at a convention in a long time. Therefore, I would like to personally say thank you for all of the con organizers, volunteers, vendors, guests, photographers, attendees, and anyone else involved in creating such an unforgettable weekend. I really hope to return to Rocky Mountain Con in the future if I am given the opportunity.
